Obituary for Jim Eddy

James “Jim” Franklin Eddy, 80 year old Checotah resident, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2016 peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born the youngest of four boys, on Saturday, May 2, 1936 to Kelley and Irene (Misenhimer) Eddy in the family home east of Checotah. He grew up helping on the family farm and enjoying everything the country life had to offer. Early in his education, Jim was allowed to skip two grades and graduated from Checotah High School at the age of 16. He played numerous sports and as a high school freshman, he was the star running back for the Checotah Wildcats. Following high school, he attended and played football as a defensive back and running back for the New Mexico State Aggies. He obtained a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree from the university. Jim began his coaching career on the high school level in Odessa, Texas, home of Friday Night Lights. He was named head football coach of Roswell, New Mexico High School. Soon after, he became assistant head coach/defensive coordinator at his Alma Mater in 1965 for 6 seasons. He was named defensive coordinator at the University of Texas, El Paso in 1971. He began his pro coaching career as defensive coordinator at Saskatchewan, Canada in 1974. Then he was elevated to head coach of the Rough Riders in 1977. Jim spent 2 seasons as defensive coordinator at Hamilton before being named head coach of Montreal Alouettes in 1981. For 10 seasons including 3 as head coach, Jim worked in the Canadian Football League where he saw his team’s 8 post season berths and played in 4 Grey Cup Championship games. During his 2 year tenure as Director of Operations/Player Personnel for Toronto, the Argonauts played in the Grey Cup Game each season including CFL Championship in 1983. Then he went on to be the Defensive Coordinator for Houston of the United States Football League. Jim helped guide the Gamblers to consecutive playoff appearances and Division Title in 1984. He then went on to be the Defensive Coordinator for the University of Houston, where his troops finished 6th in the nation in scoring defense. Jim joined the NFL as defensive coordinator for the Houston Oilers and remained there for three seasons, including the Franchises First AFC Central Crown in 1991. He then joined the Dallas Cowboys as the Defensive Assistant in 1993. In 1994, he turned his defensive knowledge and experience to coaching the Linebacker Corps. While there he helped lead the Dallas Cowboys to two more NFL Super Bowl Championships. Jim married Sharlene Lindsey on Saturday, June 17, 1995 in Dallas, Texas. One week after winning Super Bowl XXX with the Dallas Cowboys in Arizona, Jim and Sharlene welcomed their son, James “Jimmy” Franklin Eddy II on Sunday, February 4, 1996. The day after Jimmy was born Jim accepted the Defensive Coordinator position with the Detroit Lions. Within a few weeks they moved to Detroit. During this time Sharlene became pregnant with their daughter, Ashley Nicole Eddy. With a young family, and an amazing career behind him, Jim made the very personal decision to retire from the NFL to become a full time dad. Shortly after Ashley Nicole Eddy was born on Monday, June 23, 1997, Jim and Sharlene decided to move back to the family farm and build their new home on the land Jim loved. He soon took up cattle ranching and enjoyed attending every event his children participated in. The highlight of Jim’s coaching career actually occurred in his retirement when he became the coach of many of his son’s sports teams. One of his other great joys came from watching daughter Ashley throughout her cheerleading career. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Warren and Richard Eddy. He is lovingly survived by his wife Sharlene of the home; Jimmy and Ashley who now attend The University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK; his two wonderful daughters from a previous marriage, Kelley (Eddy) and David Tobin of Houston, Texas and Connie Eddy of San Angelo, TX and one grandchild, Josh Tobin of Brooklyn, NY. Jim is also survived by his brother, Paul Dean and Shirley Eddy of Joplin, MO as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and a lifetime of friends. As you continue to honor the life of Jim Eddy, memorials are to be made in his memory to The Alzheimer’s Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave. FL. 17, Chicago, IL 60601 or online at ALZ.ORG.
